## 1. THE STORY **Sixty-Six Dollars of Paper** At ten past one the shop smelled of warm toner and the vinegar rags I use on the rollers. The whiteboard by the cutter said what it had said all week: REPAIR BILL: $220 NEW MONEY. Beneath it, in my cramped capitals, sat the plan. "Banners first," Ivo said, hauling the vinyl roll off its cradle. It landed on the table like a sleeping dog. "The theater has been good to us for eleven years." "Banners are in. Look." I tapped the board. Banners, menus, posters, tickets: thirty, twenty-two, eighteen, ten dollars of materials. Eighty exactly, and every one of the hundred and twenty machine minutes spoken for. "That's two hundred fourteen over paper. Take off thirty-five for fixed costs and it's a hundred seventy-nine toward the bill." "Forty-one short." "Forty-one short," I agreed. "I've turned it over all morning. Nothing else fits better." Ivo's jaw worked. "Then the donor—" "Is a rumor until somebody's name is on a check," I said. I had loaded the first posters when my phone buzzed against the cutter's steel bed. The bank. I read the message twice while the press hummed behind me. "The bake-sale check bounced," I said. "Fourteen dollars. It was in the tin count. I can spend sixty-six on materials, not eighty." "So we drop the menus," Ivo said. "Then I'm at fifty-eight dollars and ninety minutes, with eight dollars of paper left over and a hundred twenty-five toward the bill." I dragged the order slips across the counter and started again, pencil behind my teeth, paper rustling like dry leaves. "Banners, programs, tickets: sixty-four dollars, a hundred five minutes, a hundred forty-one toward the bill." "Or?" "Or posters, programs, tickets, bookmarks. Sixty-six dollars on the nose. A hundred minutes. A hundred forty-four." Ivo set the vinyl down. "Three dollars. You're throwing out the theater for three dollars." "I'm cutting the one job whose paper costs thirty and eats fifty minutes. It was right when I had eighty. It isn't right at sixty-six." "You'd decided before I walked in." "The bounced check decided. I can't print on money that isn't there." Eleven years ago Ivo hand-lettered the theater's first banner on a bedsheet, on this very floor, and I held the ladder. I hadn't forgotten. Ivo was quiet. The cutter's motor ticked as it wound down. "And if the donor's hundred comes tonight? Then we do banners." "Then I'll cheer. But customers pay after the last print, and nobody has pledged a cent. I can't feed a press with a maybe." Ivo looked at the roll a long time, then carried it back to the cradle, slowly, the way you'd settle a sleeping dog on its bed. "I'll call the theater. They should hear it from me." I wanted to say banners were the part of the job I loved too. What I said was, "Come load programs with me." We ran programs first, then tickets, posters, bookmarks. The room grew so warm the front window fogged, and the whole shop smelled like a fresh ream. Sheets came off the drum warm enough to curl. Ivo called the theater from the back room; I heard the low murmur through the wall and the click of the handset. Then Ivo came out and fed the cutter without being asked, and neither of us said a word about banners. By ten to five the last bookmarks dropped off the blade, smelling of hot paper. I counted the stacks into boxes labeled with each customer's name, taped them, and set them by the door for pickup. The press had run a hundred minutes; twenty sat unused, and I let them go. I wrote 144 on the board beneath 220. Ivo took the marker and wrote 76 beside it, larger. My phone lay dark on the cutter. No donor had called. No pledge, no check, nothing to count. ## 2. THE RECEIPT ```json { "initial": { "orders": ["A", "C", "F", "G"], "materials": 80, "minutes": 120, "revenue": 294, "order_surplus": 214, "repair_contribution": 179, "shortfall": 41 }, "revised": { "orders": ["A", "B", "C", "E"], "materials": 66, "minutes": 100, "revenue": 245, "order_surplus": 179, "repair_contribution": 144, "shortfall": 76 }, "donation_confirmed": false } ``` **Checks** - Initial: revenue 68+38+76+112 = 294; materials 18+10+22+30 = 80; minutes 25+15+30+50 = 120. Surplus 294−80 = 214; minus $35 = 179; shortfall 220−179 = 41. - Revised: revenue 68+90+38+49 = 245; materials 18+24+10+14 = 66; minutes 25+40+15+20 = 100. Surplus 245−66 = 179; minus $35 = 144; shortfall 76. - Order surpluses (payment − materials): A 50, B 66, C 28, D 68, E 35, F 54, G 82, H 42. I enumerated every feasible subset by size, and no other plan matched either optimum. **Competing feasible plans** - Initial: B, A, C, D uses 80 materials and 115 minutes, with surplus 212 and contribution 177 (2 lower). - Revised: B, C, G uses 64 materials and 105 minutes, with revenue 240, surplus 176, contribution 141 and shortfall 79 (3 lower). This is the banner plan Ivo wanted. ## 3. THE PUBLIC UPDATE Print shop update: this afternoon's four confirmed orders (posters, programs, tickets, bookmarks) will contribute $144 toward the $220 repair bill, after materials and a $35 operating cost. We remain $76 short. A donor might give $100 tonight, but no gift or commitment has been received, so we are not counting it. Theater banners did not fit our reduced materials budget. Thank you for supporting us.
