THE STORY

Sixty-Six Dollars

The shop smelled of warm toner and burnt coffee, the way it had for eleven years. On the last afternoon before the repair deadline, I wanted a window open more than I wanted anything.

On the whiteboard, in green marker, I had written the plan: Banners, Posters, Tickets, Menus. A hundred and twenty minutes of machine time, eighty dollars of materials, and after the thirty-five the shop owed just for existing, a contribution of $179. That was short of the $220 the repair bill demanded, but near enough to look at.

Then the phone buzzed. Dell at the paper supplier: the account was capped. Sixty-six dollars for materials, not eighty. Nothing else had changed.

Ivo was already at the vinyl roll, thumbing its curled edge. "Sixty-six is still enough. Banners first. The theater opens Friday, Mara."

"Banners eat thirty dollars and fifty minutes."

"They pay a hundred and twelve."

"I know what they pay." I wiped the green plan off with the heel of my hand, and it smeared to a pale ghost. "I'm redoing it."

I did it on the back of a misprinted menu, pencil squeaking. Banners with menus broke the budget outright. Banners, programs and tickets fit: sixty-four dollars, a hundred and five minutes, $141 once the thirty-five came off. Then I tried the small jobs: posters, programs, tickets, bookmarks. Sixty-six dollars to the dollar. A hundred minutes. Two hundred forty-five in payments, a hundred seventy-nine over materials, a hundred forty-four after the thirty-five.

I turned the menu around. "Three dollars."

"Three dollars," Ivo said, as if I'd offered them a stale biscuit. "You're dropping the theater for three dollars."

"I'm taking the plan that gets us closest."

"Closest to what? Neither plan gets us there. We're seventy-some short either way, so why not be short alongside people who've bought from us for a decade?"

That landed, and I let it. The theater had paid for our first laminator. Ivo had hand-stuffed their programs every season, humming the overtures wrong.

"Because I don't get to spend the gap on loyalty," I said. "If the bank is a hair short Monday, I want to know I didn't choose that."

Ivo set the vinyl down. The roll rocked once on the table and went still. The compressor ticked in the back.

"Priya's cousin says a donor might give a hundred tonight," Ivo said finally. It sounded like a dare.

"Might."

"A hundred would nearly close it."

"It would. It hasn't come. Nobody's called, nobody's promised. I won't buy paper against a might."

Ivo looked at the ceiling, then at me. "I'll call the theater. If it comes from you they'll hear a no. From me they might hear a favor." A pause. "I'm still annoyed."

"Noted."

We worked. Ivo loaded cardstock for the bookmarks, jaw tight, and I fed the posters. They came out warm and curling, smelling of hot ink. Programs stacked in the tray in slow, even bricks. The ticket perforator zipped. Through the back wall I could hear Ivo on the phone, saying "no, really, it's the supplies" in a voice that was gentler than I'd earned.

At ten past six the last bookmark dropped. Twenty minutes of machine time sat unused and the materials money was gone to the penny. Ivo ran a thumb down a bookmark and said, grudgingly, "These are good."

I picked up the green marker and wrote: 144 in. 76 to go. Ivo watched me draw the line under it.

"Do I write the hundred?" I asked.

"Write it small," Ivo said.

I wrote: donor: no call yet. Then I set the phone face up on the counter, where we could both see it, and turned off the machines one by one.

Initial ($80, 120 min). A+C+F+G uses 18+10+22+30 = $80 and 25+15+30+50 = 120 min. Net per order (payment − materials) is 50+28+54+82 = 214, and 214 − 35 = 179. - Competitor: B+D+A+C uses $80 and 115 min, with surplus 66+68+50+28 = 212 and contribution 177. It is feasible but $2 lower.

Revised ($66, 120 min). A+B+C+E uses 18+24+10+14 = $66 and 25+40+15+20 = 100 min. Net is 50+66+28+35 = 179, and 179 − 35 = 144. - Competitor: B+C+G uses $64 and 105 min, with surplus 66+28+82 = 176 and contribution 141. It is feasible, includes the banners, and is $3 lower.

I checked the revised search by item count. No 5-order set fits $66, because the cheapest five cost $80. Every 4-order set with G exceeds the budget. The best 4-order set without G is A+B+C+E. The best set with G is 176 or lower.

THE PUBLIC UPDATE

Print-shop update: after a materials cap cut our budget to $66, our best production plan contributes $144 toward the $220 repair bill, after expenses. That leaves a $76 gap. A possible $100 donor has been mentioned, but no gift or commitment has been received, so we are not counting it. Theater banners were declined. Thank you for your patience and support.
