THE STORY
The Weight of Minutes
The Risograph hummed and spat out its last poster before falling silent for its afternoon oil change, the one Mara couldn't afford to skip. She stood over the ledger with a pencil stub, the eraser worn to a nub from all the arithmetic she'd done since lunch.
"You're not even considering it," Ivo said. He'd propped the theater's banner mockup against the paper cutter — floor-to-ceiling, deep green, GRAND REOPENING in letters he'd drawn himself. "They need these by Friday, Mara. They're the reason half our regulars even know we exist."
"I'm considering everything." She tapped the ledger. "That's the problem. Banners cost thirty in materials and fifty minutes on the machine. If I run them, I lose room for three smaller jobs that clear more money for less rope."
"Money isn't the only—"
"Money is currently the only thing keeping the lights on." She didn't say it unkindly, but it landed hard anyway, and Ivo looked away toward the drying rack, jaw tight.
She ran the numbers the way she always did before committing paper to blade: posters, tickets, menus, banners — eighteen plus ten plus twenty-two plus thirty in materials, twenty-five plus fifteen plus thirty plus fifty in machine minutes. Eighty dollars exactly. A hundred and twenty minutes, not a tick over. The four jobs together would clear two hundred and fourteen dollars above cost — more than any other combination she'd tried, and she'd tried most of them twice, suspicious of her own hope.
"We can do the banners," she said finally. "Just not alone. Posters, tickets, and menus ride along with them. Full schedule, every minute used."
Ivo exhaled like he'd been holding his breath since he walked in. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. After the gas bill for the dryer — thirty-five flat, doesn't touch materials or time, just comes off what's left — we're sitting at one-seventy-nine toward the two-twenty the repair guy wants. We'll be forty-one short."
He frowned at the chalkboard where she'd started writing the number, then erased it, then wrote it again smaller. "Dana said something about a donor. A hundred dollars, maybe, tonight."
"Maybe. Tonight." Mara set the pencil down. "I don't put maybes in a ledger."
Then Priya from the framing shop next door leaned in through the propped door, flour-dusted apron still on from whatever she'd been doing on her lunch break, and said the materials order Mara had been counting on had shrunk — sixty-six dollars available instead of eighty, a mix-up with the register float nobody had caught until now.
Mara didn't swear, though her hand tightened on the pencil hard enough that Ivo noticed.
"That kills the banners," she said, flipping back through her combinations. Fourteen less dollars put thirty out of reach entirely — not close, not tight, just gone. She crossed out G and started over, chasing the same ratio of money in to money out with eighty-six fewer cents of room to work with.
"So what replaces it?"
"Posters, programs, tickets, bookmarks. Sixty-six dollars exactly, hundred minutes of machine time, clears one-seventy-nine before the gas bill." She didn't look up. "One forty-four after."
Ivo stared at the banner mockup leaning uselessly against the cutter. "The theater needed those banners for Friday. This Friday."
"I know." She finally met his eyes. "I'm not happy about it either. But I can't print thirty dollars I don't have, and I can't pretend a maybe-donor is sixty-six dollars."
Ivo picked the mockup up, rolled it carefully, and set it on the shelf instead of in the recycling. "Next order, then. First thing."
"First thing," Mara agreed, and reached for the posters instead.

}Initial plan check (budget $80, 120 min): A+C+F+G = materials 18+10+22+30=80 (fits exactly), minutes 25+15+30+50=120 (fits exactly), revenue 68+38+76+112=294, surplus 294−80=214. After the $35 expense: 214−35=179. Shortfall vs. $220: 220−179=41.
Competing plan: A+B+C+D (materials 18+24+10+28=80, minutes 25+40+15+35=115, revenue 68+90+38+96=292, surplus 212) is feasible but yields $212 surplus — $2 less than the chosen plan, confirming A+C+F+G is better.
Revised plan check (budget $66, 120 min): A+B+C+E = materials 18+24+10+14=66 (fits exactly), minutes 25+40+15+20=100 (fits), revenue 68+90+38+49=245, surplus 245−66=179. After the $35 expense: 179−35=144. Shortfall vs. $220: 220−144=76.
Competing plan: A+C+F+H (materials 18+10+22+16=66, minutes 25+15+30+25=95, revenue 68+38+76+58=240, surplus 174) is feasible but yields only $174 surplus — $5 less, confirming A+B+C+E is better.

THE PUBLIC UPDATE
Shop update: Today's print run confirmed $144 toward our $220 repair goal — materials came in $14 short of plan, so we ran posters, programs, tickets, and bookmarks instead of the theater banners. We're still $76 short. A possible $100 donor has been mentioned but nothing is confirmed or received. We'll share the next order plan soon.
