1. THE STORY

The Last Afternoon on Pell Street

The ink smelled like wet pennies. Mara always noticed it on Thursdays, when the humidity crept through the loading door and settled on the Risograph like a damp hand. She had taped the repair invoice to the wall above the till two weeks ago — $220 due by Friday noon or the drum assembly got shipped back uninstalled — and every morning she touched the paper on her way past, the way other people touched a saint.

Ivo came in at one, carrying a cardboard tube under his arm and a grievance under his tongue.

"The banners," he said. "G. You have to run G."

"I'm running the numbers," she said.

"The theater has been with us since we opened. Lila's whole season —"

"I know whose season it is."

She had chalked the orders on the slate by the paper cutter. Eight rows, four columns, and at the bottom her first plan: G, F, A, C. Banners, menus, posters, tickets. Eighty dollars of card and ink to the dime, two full hours on the machine, a surplus of two hundred fourteen before the thirty-five-dollar power bill ate its share. One seventy-nine toward the drum. Still forty-one short, but closer than she had been all week, and the banners would hang over Elm Street by Saturday with Ivo's name quietly stitched into the hem of his pride.

Then Dev called from the credit union.

"Only sixty-six cleared," he said. "The transfer from the grant account bounced the overage. I'm sorry, Mar."

She stood a long moment with the receiver against her collarbone, looking at the slate. Ivo watched her face and knew.

"No," he said.

"I haven't said anything yet."

"You're going to say no to G."

She wiped the chalk with the heel of her hand and started over. Sixty-six dollars of materials. Still a hundred twenty minutes. She wrote combinations down the margin in her small, square hand, crossing out the ones that spilled past the budget. G and F would not fit. G and D would not fit. G and anything useful kept crashing against that ceiling of sixty-six like a moth at a porch light. Without G, the arithmetic opened up. Programs, posters, tickets, bookmarks: twenty-four plus eighteen plus ten plus fourteen. Exactly sixty-six. One hundred minutes on the machine. Surplus of one seventy-nine. After the power bill, one hundred forty-four toward the drum. Seventy-six still to find by noon tomorrow.

"B, A, C, E," she said.

"Mara."

"It's the best plan I have."

"Pell said he might come through with a hundred tonight."

"Pell says a lot of things."

"He's good for it."

"He's good for it when he's good for it. I can't buy card stock with 'might.'"

Ivo set the tube down on the layout table hard enough that the pica rulers jumped. "Lila is going to lose her mind."

"Lila is going to get her banners next week when the drum is in and I have a shop to run them in. Or she's going to get them from the quick-print on Harrison and I'm going to live with that." She pulled the box of kraft envelopes toward her and began counting out blanks for the programs. "You can help me or you can stand there."

He stood there for about a minute. Then he took off his jacket, hung it on the nail by the door that had been meant for a coat rack six years running, and started cutting bookmark stock down to size. The paper cutter made its clean, patient sound. Outside, someone's radio drifted through the open loading door — a weather report, then a song Mara half-remembered from a wedding.

They ran the programs first because the dry time was longest. Ivo fed sheets while Mara watched the registration, her thumb on the stop. The posters came off clean on the second pass. By four they were onto tickets, by five the bookmarks, perforated in strips of eight, warm from the drum that was, for the moment, still breathing.

Ivo didn't look at the phone. Neither did she. Pell had not called by the time the last bookmark came off the roller, and he had not called by the time Mara swept the trimmings into the bin and locked the cash drawer on two hundred forty-five dollars that would, after the power bill, leave her seventy-six short of a Friday noon she could not move.

"Tomorrow," Ivo said, which was not an answer, only a direction.

"Tomorrow," she agreed, and turned out the light.

2. THE RECEIPT

Receipt
{
  "initial": {
    "orders": ["A", "C", "F", "G"],
    "materials": 80,
    "minutes": 120,
    "revenue": 294,
    "order_surplus": 214,
    "repair_contribution": 179,
    "shortfall": 41
  },
  "revised": {
    "orders": ["A", "B", "C", "E"],
    "materials": 66,
    "minutes": 100,
    "revenue": 245,
    "order_surplus": 179,
    "repair_contribution": 144,
    "shortfall": 76
  },
  "donation_confirmed": false
}

Initial check: A+C+F+G = materials 18+10+22+30 = 80 ✓, minutes 25+15+30+50 = 120 ✓, revenue 68+38+76+112 = 294, surplus 294−80 = 214, contribution 214−35 = 179. A competing plan D+B+A+C uses materials 28+24+18+10 = 80 and minutes 35+40+25+15 = 115 for surplus 212 — one dollar less.

Revised check: A+B+C+E = materials 18+24+10+14 = 66 ✓, minutes 25+40+15+20 = 100 ✓, revenue 68+90+38+49 = 245, surplus 245−66 = 179, contribution 179−35 = 144. G cannot be combined with any second order whose materials fit in the remaining $36 and still beat 179: the best G-plan, G+B+C, yields surplus 82+66+28 = 176. H+F+A+C hits materials 66 exactly for surplus 174.

3. THE PUBLIC UPDATE

Thursday was our last production day before Friday's repair deadline. With a reduced materials budget we filled four jobs — programs, posters, tickets, and bookmarks — and after the $35 operating cost we have $144 confirmed toward the $220 repair bill, leaving a gap of $76. A supporter has mentioned a possible $100 gift, but no donation has been pledged or received. If you can help close the $76, please stop by before noon Friday.
